Advisory <em><strong>Council</strong></em>

ABOUT THIS PHOTO

Photographer Ed Roseberry grabbed his 1950 4×5 Speedgraphic camera to record this split-second moment before tip off when University Hall in Charlottesville was packed with ecstatic fans for the last home game of the 1981-82 basketball season. The #1-ranked Cavaliers hosted #18 Wake Forest on Wednesday night, February 24. UVA’s decisive 84-66 victory was their 30th consecutive win in U-Hall and their 14th straight of the season. Center Ralph Sampson scored 22 points— 14 of those in the final 20 minutes. Led by Coach Terry Holland, UVA went 30-4 that year, 12-2 in the ACC, and made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. Ralph Sampson went first in the first round in the 1983 NBA draft and was named Rookie of the Year in his first season playing for the Houston Rockets. He spent more than a decade playing professional basketball.

I appreciate your wisdom, experience and thoughtful input which continues to help guide our important work. The Charlottesville Center for History and Culture is poised to re-invent our historical society for a new era, contributing positively to our neighborhoods and communities, and helping to create opportunities to enlighten and inspire. I appreciate everything you do to move this mission forward. “ — Coy Barefoot, Executive Director
